What... is middle class about eating salad? And like... yeah I’m sure you can get some Brand Tongs or something but mine were like $2 so...?

I just think a tendency to buy specialized kitchen utensils (even though of course many are cheap) is relatively middle class. Specialized items in general are IMO. Like buying water cups instead of using leftover jars & plastic freebies.

water glasses (or really just...glasses?) are not a middle class thing, and my working class relatives all have them. They aren’t drinking water out of jam jars.

Drinking out of jam jars strikes me as really NOT working-class... more like hipster/foodie aesthetic. @jillian_kern, what’s a “plastic freebie”? Brain fart maybe but...??

I hear the “specialized cooking equipment” thing, but I’d only have applied it to unusual and expensive specialty items. Like... most homes are gonna have a cheese grater, tongs, a paring knife, a kettle.

Working class people cook. Working class people often *have to* cook. Most chefs are working class. Most classic dishes originate from working people feeding themselves. And we don’t drink from jars. The disinclination to associate working class with skill is beyond insulting

It’s not about spending money on things because we “don’t deserve” them. It’s because when you know where every dollar is going, it seems much more practical to use an old cool whip container as Tupperware.

working class people will also occasionally buy something fancy, or inherit items from other family members? Like yeah I get that there’s a frugality mindset, but it’s not like working class people who don’t use old cool whip containers are suddenly middle class.

I’m sorry but rhetoric like this implies every frivolous purchase a working class person makes is financial mismanagement. You’re implying I must not be truly poor because I have wine glasses. That’s a major pillar of classism

No one implied that. We’re just saying that in our experience, salad tongs and glasses are something a middle-class family owns as necessities. Our working class families might think of them as special occasion wear.

Class is complex. In my field, we usually use education as a good indicator of middle-class status. We’re not implying that there’s a clear line where you suddenly become middle class; how people identify is important.

Using ‘education’ to define class is the most classist thing I’ve ever heard. What counts as education? Formal qualifications? Reading books? Learning skills? Jesus Christ so much implicit classim here, I’m out.
