What... is middle class about eating salad? And like... yeah I’m sure you can get some Brand Tongs or something but mine were like $2 so...?

I just think a tendency to buy specialized kitchen utensils (even though of course many are cheap) is relatively middle class. Specialized items in general are IMO. Like buying water cups instead of using leftover jars & plastic freebies.

water glasses (or really just...glasses?) are not a middle class thing, and my working class relatives all have them. They aren’t drinking water out of jam jars.

Drinking out of jam jars strikes me as really NOT working-class... more like hipster/foodie aesthetic. @jillian_kern, what’s a “plastic freebie”? Brain fart maybe but...??

I hear the “specialized cooking equipment” thing, but I’d only have applied it to unusual and expensive specialty items. Like... most homes are gonna have a cheese grater, tongs, a paring knife, a kettle.

Working class people cook. Working class people often *have to* cook. Most chefs are working class. Most classic dishes originate from working people feeding themselves. And we don’t drink from jars. The disinclination to associate working class with skill is beyond insulting

I’m astounded. ‘Specialised items’? We’re talking about salad tongs and glasses not a sous-vide machine or molecular gastronomy.

My grandma had loads of little gadgets and stuff. Thing was that she just never replaced them, so when she passed she had loads of these 50 year old kitchen tools.

Please tell me you still use at least some of them! This is why I have an electric griddle, (possibly the most unnecessary kitchen object ever, but I refuse to cook pancakes on anything else, coz this is grandma’s).

I don’t because I moved across an ocean. But my mother still has them. She doesn’t use a lot of them because many no longer work or she had her own.

I appreciate y'all leaping aggressively to the defense of the working class (my own background and my family) against supposed stereotypes. But I'm not the type who would be making flippant jokes abt class signifiers if they weren't self-targeting. I'm speaking of my experience.

Obviously, our working class experiences were widely variable, hence in my explanation of me being flippant, me saying I wouldn't want to try to draw any lines in the sand.
