So this is a big issue and depending on where you are doing your masters or PhD you’ll do some or all of these. However, some of the responses from academics are super frustrating to me, as someone still completing the PhD.https://twitter.com/Jessifer/status/1227237648433020928 …

The first is the heavily American perspective that I see a lot of academic twitter has. So I see people say, well make sure to choose a programme that does xyz. Okay great, good advice for people who haven’t started.

In my experience, it's not even at a program level, it varies by advisor. So one faculty member carefully scaffolds how to do these things, and another doesn't even mention to their students they can get conference funding. A prospective student can't know that in advance.

Also true. Supervisors can vary in quality. I am lucky to have two that let me work at my own pace, don’t baby me, but are also great with advice. Some supervisors have a sink or swim mentality. Others truly dgaf.

I was also able to meet one of my supervisors before I started the PhD because I did my MPhil at the same uni in the same department. So I could get info ahead of time.

My department assigned them after you entered. You could switch, but it was rare.

Ah see in Ireland and I think the UK as well it depends, you can apply for a specific funding if a staff member has it for a more streamlined programme that they choose. Sometimes you get allocated to someone, depending on space. When I started there were a lot fewer PhDs so

Essentially we could choose our supervisors.
