So this is a big issue and depending on where you are doing your masters or PhD you’ll do some or all of these. However, some of the responses from academics are super frustrating to me, as someone still completing the PhD.https://twitter.com/Jessifer/status/1227237648433020928 …

But for those who are well into their degree? We need to develop resources or give advice for what they can do. I’ve frequently been feeling like...idk, sort of stupid because I chose a university in Ireland where funding is scarce.

And I’ve gotten Americans telling me that I should have gone to the states to do my PhD because I would have gotten funding. Well no, because tbh my university is the best one for my programme. I have free access to certain undigitized MSS that I need.

There are experts here I can basically just talk to face to face. The libraries here have stuff I can’t necessarily get elsewhere.

I know that we need to break down this idea of certain institutions being “better” from a prestige perspective, but for people who want to study something specific, and need access to stuff? That’s a lot harder.

PhD programmes aren’t universally interchangeable and I wish there was more acknowledgement of that. If I stayed in Canada or went to the States, my PhD programme would be twice as long (no thanks) with more coursework (no thanks), and I’d have to travel to Ireland all the time.

So the advice of: “well I tell students to pick a different university” is massively unhelpful and basically useless for many already in a programme.

We can advocate for these sorts of modules to be added. We are required to take a teaching module at my university but depending on the dept, PhDs usually do not teach lectures, only tutorials.

There are optional things to take to learn about vivas and academic publishing which certainly vary in quality imo.

And for the ADHD among us (like me) the last thing I want is to take a 2 hour module in my final year on this stuff. So online resources etc are also needed I think. And also resources from non-American perspectives.

In my experience, it's not even at a program level, it varies by advisor. So one faculty member carefully scaffolds how to do these things, and another doesn't even mention to their students they can get conference funding. A prospective student can't know that in advance.

Also true. Supervisors can vary in quality. I am lucky to have two that let me work at my own pace, don’t baby me, but are also great with advice. Some supervisors have a sink or swim mentality. Others truly dgaf.
