Just a general comment on something that’s been happening, but certain academics are hiding behind mental illness to excuse their bad behaviour and to twist the narrative to say that they’re getting attacked and it’s bad because they’re depressed.

Well, I’m sorry to say that it’s basically the reverse. They’ve been attacking and gaslighting people for months now, people who are vulnerable.

Considering as well how many folks who have been speaking against the racism and bullying and harassment in the field deal with mental illness and are neurodivergent, this is insulting and upsetting.

These are privileged tenured white folks casting themselves as victims when they can essentially do whatever they want to BIPOC and queer scholars, whether they are independent, tenured, or ECRs.

And not only does it ignore that BIPOC suffer from mental illness but it frames us as the bullies when in fact we’re the ones losing sleep over this. We’re the ones in precarious situations.

They aren’t at any risk: no matter if their departments are informed of their actions, nothing happens. Whereas BIPOC and queer folks and ECRs and disabled academics are that much more subject to the whims of people in power.

Plus, hiding behind mental illness as a way to excuse racism or bullying is actually very ableist and horrible

Hands up if you have anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, autism, etc and it doesn’t compel you to bully others and post blackface images.

Hey, I am at least two of those things, and likely at least three, and I have done a significant lack of bullying or blackface.

Same here. And to be clear it is absolutely possible for people to be racist and have a mental illness but one doesn’t cause the other.

And it’s just insulting and ableist that they’re calling US ableist for holding them accountable for their actions, and I feel like this kind of gaslighting is just...idk. It makes me feel sick and angry.
