I do not believe I called him a racist, but he may have gotten that impression since I said that white people who stay silent about white supremacy enable it. That is an accurate statement though and I stand by it.

And I have to wonder, is the fear that you think he’d retaliate or that you’d burn a bridge? Because if it’s former I understand, as an ECR, to an extent. But if it’s the latter, why do you want this sort of person as a friend or mentor?

There have been ppl I look up to whom I found out stuff about later that made me upset but in the long run, do I want to maintain a connection with someone who holds terrible views, has done bad things and not accounted for them/owned up/done better? Nope.

Academia as it is now thrives on keeping quiet and maintaining status quo, which means keeping abusers in power.

But if we want academia to be an inclusive, anti-racist, diverse space that doesn’t adhere to authoritarian, imperialist, and colonialist models that rewards the worst and punishes the marginalized then we gotta stand up against that.

We have to stop allowing these people to say and do what they want. Idk how this can happen, but honestly it only works if people stand up and support their BIPOC colleagues.
