Btw this thread is about my specific interactions with him. And this isn’t directed at anyone in particular except to say that the people standing up now? It would have been nice to see that 4 months ago.

From mocking subtweets about using gifs, to his very clear difference in reply to senior white scholars correcting him versus BIPOC, ECRs, and their allies.

The guy very clearly mischaracterised the AS debate. I told him so, I asked him to apologize to those he was misquoting, told him he was being disingenuous. I also told all the white scholars congratulating him on his blog to review the responses to it.

He was very angry. He made a passive aggressive remark about my PhD, which felt worrying as a PhD in his field. He refused to engage with any WOC, basically.
Show this thread -
He insulted another scholar’s publications and called another scholar a cat lady (or implied it) because they wrote a blog asking for him to apologize etc.
Show this thread -
And he has been consistently maintaining the narrative that myself and others have been harassing him, calling him a racist, etc.
Show this thread -
I do not believe I called him a racist, but he may have gotten that impression since I said that white people who stay silent about white supremacy enable it. That is an accurate statement though and I stand by it.
Show this thread -
He called me “Broomhead”, a minion full of hot air, for attempting to inform someone who I thought was an ally (how wrong I was) about how he was not being truthful about everything that has happened.
Show this thread -
He has also been threatening legal action for libel. I’m not sure what exactly has been libellous against him, but he was very angry at the suggestion that certain high standing scholars were sexual predators and racists.
Show this thread -
That wasn’t from me but from a more established scholar, who has the receipts.
Show this thread -
When asked to educate racists here on Twitter, which was ostensibly what he was calling for us as academics to do, he refused.
Show this thread -
He blocks anyone who criticizes him. Anyone, even those who are doing it in the gentlest manner.
Show this thread -
And he maintains friendships with those who have harassed and spread misinformation about BIPOC, queer scholars, and ECRs.
Show this thread -
His latest blackface tweet plus the RTing of doxxing attempts against WOC is evidently the last straw for many of you, but frankly it shouldn’t have taken this long.

The info is out there.
@ISASaxonists@erik_kaars@kacaliendo@dorothyk98@EileenAJoy are some of those who have been speaking out against this stuff for awhile, with screenshots and proof. They have all attempted to discuss this stuff in good faith with those that attack them.Show this thread -
They put out screenshots, collect the info, educate, etc. for everyone to see. Why has it taken so long for so many of you to say something? I know why, but you should really interrogate that amongst yourselves.
Show this thread -
Did you feel unsafe doing so? Well tbh, many of you are well-situated to call it out.
Show this thread -
And I have to wonder, is the fear that you think he’d retaliate or that you’d burn a bridge? Because if it’s former I understand, as an ECR, to an extent. But if it’s the latter, why do you want this sort of person as a friend or mentor?
Show this thread -
There have been ppl I look up to whom I found out stuff about later that made me upset but in the long run, do I want to maintain a connection with someone who holds terrible views, has done bad things and not accounted for them/owned up/done better? Nope.

Academia as it is now thrives on keeping quiet and maintaining status quo, which means keeping abusers in power.
Show this thread -
But if we want academia to be an inclusive, anti-racist, diverse space that doesn’t adhere to authoritarian, imperialist, and colonialist models that rewards the worst and punishes the marginalized then we gotta stand up against that.
Show this thread -
We have to stop allowing these people to say and do what they want. Idk how this can happen, but honestly it only works if people stand up and support their BIPOC colleagues.
