I've remained silent over the last number of days but I'm no longer happy with what's been scrolling past my timeline and making me anxious. I would have liked a better outcome but I cannot silently condone the behaviour of people I have worked with

I have been in contact with and collaborated happily with Howard Williams for a number of years, he's been on my podcast, and he invited me to write for the recent publication: Arts of Engagement. I'm not happy with his behaviour when it comes to the recent Anglo-Saxon debate

Now I do not wish to add to an already large pile on but I want to make it clear that if accused of racism, one should take actions to reflect on one's part of the whole conversation, not just as an outside observer. I have gone through HW blogs where I feel that ...

....the actual bit about the way the alr-right and racists use AS is secondary to behaviour around it. The fact remains that the longer academy holds on to AS, the more power and legitimacy it is given. Irony trolls will pick up on this to no end

Even more destructive is the unaware privilege of "why should someone be attacked for being white or a man" - this is petrol on the raging fire of nationalism. Even if one feels legitimately aggrieved, this language panders in hard to the far right.

History is the form it is created and consumed are all part of the same problem. It's all been created in order to separate the great from the small. What we are seeing is a microcosm of it. if you are unable to see the problem of whiteness it does cause more issues.

I think history, Heritage and archaeology can not simply do a tick box exercise of removing certain words and terms, it has to more fundamental convert itself. But a step in the right direction is to take the wind of the right wing sails when they wield AS as a weapon.

I was incredibly grateful that you invited me to contribute to AoE and I did it because it was an opportunity to highlight podcasts in archaeology but you've missed the mark for me and I can't condone your behaviour.

I appreciate you saying this Tristan, but tbh he has been behaving very badly for months on end now. I became the target of his ire back in September simply for being honest about how he has mischaracterised the AS debate and those involved.

Replying to @AdmiralHip @Anarchaeologist
And as you say, and as
@ISASaxonists said many times, moving past the name was just the first step. There needs to be serious changes. Racism is deep in the academy, along with the sexism and harassment and the protection of awful abusers.0 replies 1 retweet 3 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
