I think the idea that unconscious racism is somehow different than conscious racism is interesting. Williams has consistently harassed and tone-policed people of color on this platform. Whether he thinks that's racism or not is kinda... immaterial?

I really just think you're splitting hairs here. Something can be consciously malicious while unconsciously racist (trying to get Dr. MRO booted from Leeds, for example). Pointing out that that's racist is just a way of drawing attention to the structural iniquities...

I take your point: something can be unconsciously racist and consciously malicious. The GIF was (probably) unconsciously racist and not malicious. The other stuff, maybe not...

It doesn’t matter if it’s malicious or not, he had to look up that image, it’s obviously blackface, he thought it was okay to use. Why is this even a discussion? The man has been doing horrible shit, who cares about intent? Intent doesn’t matter. It’s racist.

And frankly I have to wonder what you thought this thread would accomplish? Who were you trying to reach here? Howard apologized to you, deflected, and repeated the same lie about blocking people. Dr MRO hasn’t received an apology and a retraction here about the other shit.

Like I said, I was hoping that HW would admit that the GIF was racist, unblock and open up, and start making amends. I thought that an apology for this might be the opportunity for something bigger. That's not a bad thing at all.

Not only does your thread not address the wider implications or actions that he’s undertaken in several months, but it definitely comes across as excusing his behaviour through discussions of intent etc.

But why are we centering the behavior/motivation of the white person in this instance instead of centering the damage this behavior has done to BIPOC?
