Okay, so G Halsall has apparently blocked me too before I could reply to him, but I've been stewing about something for a while. He accused @erik_kaars of thinking rape is funny. ...so? I mean, duh. Me too. It's how I cope with mine. [I obviously can't link his tweets now.]

If making jokes about rape is vile no matter what, I have bad news for everyone about http://chaumpaigne.org , the project that came about because I was processing my own rape and that I titled, with Chaumpaigne's words, De raptu meo. ...yeah, that's a really, really bad joke.

Direction matters. Punching up, not down. And, let's be real, there are certain jokes that are only going to click for survivors. I had a blast at a comedy set by a survivor about her rape. So did about a fifth of the room. Everyone else looked exquisitely uncomfortable.

Thanks for saying this. The problem with Erik’s title was a completely fabricated non-issue meant to smear a gay ECR for being outspoken against Halsall and the other awful people in medieval studies. The whole thing was bullshit and so obviously a canard.

It's like the (utterly absurd) accusation that MRO is engaging in digital blackface -- it's a bad faith appropriation of "woke" internet discourse, but they won't let it go because it's the only tactic they have that doesn't reveal them to be out-and-out racists.

Sorry, @AdmiralHip, but you don’t live in my PTSD head. I’ve admitted immediate cause 4 tweet was anger at screenshots taken from a locked account & presented as if all part of one convo. But that does not negate being a trigger 4 me in the clinical sense + major squick.

I think I have missed something here, likely because I was out of it when this issue came up initially. My tweets are solely about Halsall's statements, which I do find a mischaracterization. I do not mean to suggest that the book title can't function as a trigger.
