My family was better off when I was a kid versus when my brothers were kids (over a decade age difference) versus when my parents were kids but I look back on a few things and wonderhttps://twitter.com/victoriabwrites/status/1219068778748751873 …

Former poor kids: what are some things you have in your house that you *never* had as a kid, things your not-poor friends would never consider luxuries?

Growing up, we’d have clothes be put on layaway, the gap was considered an expensive store, we ate basically only spaghetti and chicken with boiled broccoli and carrots with a few occasionally different meals

Such as this sort of steak boiled in a tomato based sauce and stir fry with noodles (both were considered luxury meals).

Fruit other than apples was a big deal. I frequently ate butter sandwiches for lunch. Instant ramen, KD, and McDonald’s were pretty common for food.

But we didn’t ever have snacks. My mom would bake cookies for me but I remember thinking richer kids in school had fancy store bought cookies.

My brothers had jobs by the time I was 5-7 so they had disposable income of their own, and bought game consoles and computers, etc. so we always had those.

We were better off than a few others I knew but for the first 3-4 years of elementary school it felt like I was counted among the poorer kids.
