I would like to hear a statement from the editors of this volume - Profs. Dan Remein and @ericamweaver - about the collection’s repeated intellectual theft without citation of a scholar of color’s well-known argument. They and @ManchesterUP need to address this. #MedievalTwitter https://t.co/qBR0zUI3Ql

I would hope that they would address how this could have happened and what steps will be taken to rectify it. I would further hope that the other concerns raised about the collection—including its erasure of scholars of color while heavily citing known abusers—would be addressed

The core of responsible scholarship is ethical citation. Not citing scholars of color, reappropriating their scholarship without acknowledgement, asking contributors to remove criticism of gatekeepers—this entrenches the violence and colonization of the field.

That this anthology explicitly advertises itself as progressive while erasing and stealing from scholars of color, ignoring the work of queer scholars, and using terminology like “Anglo-Saxon” that the editors *acknowledge to be racist*, is not ethical scholarship.

It is disheartening that a number of marginalized scholars—especially scholars of color—have raised serious concerns over the last few days and the editors have not so much as acknowledged them. I would have hoped they would show more respect to marginalized colleagues than this.

This is dreadful and MUST be addressed, but — to be fair — this has blown up over the Christmas-New Year break. The editors may be off devices/social media while on annual leave (I wish I had the discipline 😉).

They were happy to promote the volume over the break. The initial criticisms came immediately too.

Only one of them is on Twitter, and she hasn’t tweeted at all on since she did the promotion for the vol on 27 December. I don’t know these people at all - not my field - but that suggests it was the last thing she did before she went away, and may not even know there’s a furore.

They have both been contacted and let me just say that this isn't the first time that both editors have chosen not to respond. So this isn't just about the holidays or timing.
