Earlier this week I Tweeted about how my upcoming fantasy series has no sexual violence because I didn’t want it in the world. A couple of guys were demanding explanations and accusing me of bad writing. “There has to be a fundamental reason why it doesn’t happen!”

Yep. I don’t remember any sexual violence in The Lord of The Rings. Also don’t recall Tolkien having to justify that. Also don’t recall Peter Jackson not making the movie regardless. Also don’t recall Peter Jackson adding it in, for realism. Also don’t recall noticing.

All good points. So why was there so much in #GOT?

You’d have to ask GRRM that.

He justifies it by saying it was common in medieval Europe. And I mean...that is a massive oversimplication and frankly inaccurate summation of sexual violence in the Middle Ages. Yes, rape happened but it was not endemic.

How do we know that? Honest curious question, not baiting.

Because of the laws and attitudes about sexual violence written down. I don’t have the time or space to get into it here but sexual violence etc is discussed at length in many publications. And every medievalist I know who writes on it says that GRRM got it wrong.

And frankly he gets a lot else wrong too. But again, many people have written on it, I’m sure a cursory google will lead you to some more info. The bad history subreddit isn’t awesome but I believe they talk about it.
