It is not yet noon and I have already helped unload 4 round bales (~600lbs ea) and then collected 35 gallons of water (~280lbs in containers that are either 56lbs or 40lbs). Then we let the sheep and goats out to nom some chickweed and wild onion, then we put them back.

And that women were doing all the stuff in the house etc in addition to also outside work. I agree that they should have compared with farmer women though too.

There is an anthropological maxim - not a universal! - where men do the “burst” heavy work, like clearing trees, short term high energy (high maximum strength) output, and women do as much or more total work, but more spread out.

If you wanted to characterize that as “But I did that one thing you couldn’t do, so leave me alone while I nap while I nap while you tend the crops”, I might say you were over-simplifying, but I wouldn’t say I was sure you were wrong.
