Despite the lack of funding here in Ireland, one thing I am grateful for is that I don’t have to do comps and my PhD is only 4 years.

Here we are considered provisional until the second year review, where we submit a chapter to the department and go through a mini-defense. After which we are confirmed and placed on the PhD register.

It causes a lot of stress and headache because no one knows how tough it will be, it’s all dependent on your internal examiner.

So mine was actually quite hard. I passed with no corrections but it was very stressful.

They can pass you with no corrections, minor corrections, major corrections (which means having another review in a few months), recommendation to do an M.Res, or to just not do anything at all.
