At the risk of a dogpile, I am just gonna say here that entitling a book “Lie Back and Think of England” is a sure-fire way to get people to question your sense of humour AND your feelings about rape and consent— & maybe draw conclusions you don’t like. Glass houses, motes, pot

I can’t imagine why someone would call a book this. It gives the impression that the author doesn’t like women, and/or thinks that there is something amusing about rape. Even if these things aren’t actually the case, this title makes it sound like they are.

Subtweeting a junior gay male scholar with implications like this is a) tapping into homophobic stereotypes that paint gay men as perverts, predators and misogynists, and b) the sort of thing anyone paying attention lately should have come to expect from both of you.

After not doing anything about the known predators in ISAS while on the board @HFoxhallForbes you might consider the glass house you live in when it comes to implying others don’t care about women

I made no comments about individuals here; I was observing that the title gives a particular impression. That impression may be false or misleading, but it is given by the choice of that title all the same. As we all know, the words we use matter.

I don’t need to know anything about you as a person to know when your words are homophobic or racist

I have made no comments about individuals except in responding to you personally, and my comment that offended you does not relate to race.

It also isn’t homophobic. There’s literally no other sensible way to read that title. If you are determined to read it another way, that’s fine. I was simply commenting on the impression it gives. As far as I know the book is not yet out, so perhaps it can change.

The comment you made is quite literally about the supposed character of the author, and as Erik is a gay man he can certainly speak to how these criticisms read. If you had real concerns about this, both of you could have mentioned it to Erik instead of snide subtweets.

And to be honest, considering the book is about rape culture, a phrase that evokes that as a discussion of it does not indicate misogyny of the author. He isn’t endorsing the attitude.

And when other queer people step in to say it is also homophobic? Yeah, it is.
