Are there any insights into the etymology of óenach/óenaig aside from being a derivative of óen? And why it became indicative of an assembly? Tagging in @eDIL_Dictionary @ChronHib but perhaps others have some thoughts.

I used to regard it simply as a substantivised adjectival derivative of óen, i.e. something like "re-union", but I found somewhere the explanation as *oi̯n-ag-o-, i.e. a compound with the root *ag- "to drive". Unfortunately I don't recall where I saw this. I have the feeling...

...that it is in a work by Fergus Kelly, but I checked - it is not in EIL nor in EIF.

So then ultimately it may be related to aige?

I was looking up *ag today after seeing “agon regale” because it seemed too close to aige to be a coincidence, but I haven’t seen anything about oenach. I’ll see if I can find a ref from Kelly.

Indeed, óenach glosses agon - or vice versa - in the Lorica of Gildas and in the Latin Lives, but whether that proves anything is a different matter.

Yeah I’m wary of those etymological explanations, certainly.

Re: Kelly, I wonder if it’s in his ed of Audacht Morainn, since I believe there is a ref to óenaig in the text but I may be mistaken. Been awhile since I read it.

Bingo. He doesn't actually discuss the etymology of the word, but he says (p. xxxi) that "historical g is preserved ... in §28 oenagh". I may have seen a more explicit discussion elsewhere, but this is fairly unambiguous.

Thanks! I’ll check that ref myself, it’s worth it for the footnote anyway
