And, again, I wish that the makeup of the panel had been different. I certainly hope that the makeup of future panels is different.

But have you spoken to THEM about this,
@profwmsmith? You've come to various scholars on "this side" repeatedly to push back on narratives and urge compassion for these scholars, but are you doing that work with them as well?4 replies 1 retweet 22 likes -

Problem is: there’s no nice way to tell people to stop annoying others. You’re not doing anyone a favour by fan dancing around the problem. But I do wish the aggrieved parties would exhibit some measure of tact. I really do.

this would be an appropriate wish if it weren’t for the fact that certain people involved have received rape and death threats thanks to the actions of others, others who subsequently either minimised or dismissed those threats.

There are three audiences here: 1. Reasonable people, willing to move on from A-S. 2. Irritated people, who have used the term all their professional lives and resent being yelled at. 3. Dangerous white power types who make threats.

sorry but this particular conversation started long before “A-S” became public, and over the last 5 years your “3” have received a LOT of support from people within the discipline presenting themselves as your “1”.

You are allowing the 3s to run this little show. Basic negotiation theory.

are you saying identifying racism creates racism? or can you identify where you have seen me “yelling” at anyone?

If I have anything to say, I will say it. The issue of what constitutes racism- the English-speaking world is dyed in racism. I am saying the goal is to make 2s into 1s. Of the 3s we can do naught but involve Twitter and law enforcement.

Yeah like law enforcement has never had white supremacist issues. To be clear, we aren’t exactly out to change the minds of WS (although some do reform themselves). But racist narratives get baked into more popular conceptions that people can be unaware of.

It is necessary to challenge those views, because now we have WS who are using the works of certain scholars to fuel their arguments and views. They are often smart enough to hide being euphemistic language too. Law enforcement would ignore it unless it’s a direct threat.

Twitter does fuck all in getting rid of these types and tbqh many police etc will not take threats on here seriously, especially from marginalized people.
