I just left that panel, which was productive and interesting (though the composition of the panel was an obvious problem). It concluded with pleas from many that we, as medievalists, all work together to combat the actions of white supremacists...

Thanks for the feedback. Did anyone ask how besmirching antiracist scholars' names in FB groups and continuously subtweeting and insulting us demonstrates a willingness to "work together?" Seems like bad faith unless we're going to be seeing some sort of reaching out soon.

No, but there were repeated calls for actual conversation between groups. I do respect your anger and distrust, and I’m not criticizing those reactions, but the overwhelming feeling in the room, to me, was sadness that our friends and colleagues are so divided right now.

Speaking only for myself, I hope that we do see reaching out very soon.

I appreciate your optimism but these people are evidently not interested in reaching out for real. If they were, it would have happened by now. They wouldn’t be saying horrible things in private and on fb, and blocking everyone.

When asked why there wasn’t more reaching out for this panel, the response was that any attempts to reach out would have been rejected out of hand. In other words, people on both “sides” are accusing the other of acting in bad faith. Real conversation could help.

No one's ever reached out to me, so going on assumptions like that seems like an excuse not to reach out.

I can’t reach out for them. I’m not an envoy for anyone. But I’ll personally say that I am glad you’re in the field and doing the work that you’re doing. And I’m also glad that the members of that panel are in the field and doing their work.

I mean, it is super disingenuous for certain people on that panel to be talking about this stuff when only this year one had a whole thing about medieval scholars should be monks in their cells, not doing political work. Like, you seem to want to find good intentions here.

And I get that, but these people have been repeat offenders for awhile now, and blocking BIPOC and allies on all platforms and not responding to justified criticism. None of them care about reaching out.

And for the record, when people have been accountable for the actions then I would say we’re pretty reasonable people regarding that but that hasn’t happened.

At least not with these individuals.
