As far as I can tell, they do not acknowledge the enforcement of these rules would not have really been possible, at a late or early stage, and would have been targeted towards elites (who received dispensation often or flouted the rules).
Well then. I appreciate that you are skeptical of the paper. But I don’t need someone to explain how history is studied. Thanks.

No, I don't want to do that at all. As I said, I truly appreciate your insights very much! I just wanted to share why I found the paper interesting. I don't see it as "X was responsible for modernity" but rather "we found X and perhaps it might be a contributing factor to Y."

There are so many theses out there, especially for the Great Divergence - coal & colonies, institutions, protestantism, geography, the plague, capitalism, violence, or everything together - so I generally find it interesting when a new element is added & ponder if it makes sense.
