To be clear, there are English fascists who ID as Anglo-Saxon and have been virulently horrible towards Dr Rambaran-Olm and others over this, making videos about her and allies. It is not just a racist term in America.

Regarding the ID of English: BAME people may be less likely to ID as English but many do. However, I highly doubt that any ID as Anglo-Saxon. I do not think that switching to Early Medieval England in place of Anglo-Saxon England will make racism worse there.

The basis that English is also a mainstream term that is used by regular people as well as historians, not just the EDL? That no one was hand wringing over “England” in “Anglo-Saxon England” until now.

There is some degree of anachronicity with terms applied to the medieval period, but this has been discussed several times over by actual BIPOC, and people in the field.
