I see a lot of “Anglo-Saxon horn” this and “Anglo-Saxon comb” that all over archaeologists’ feeds, and the defense that contemporary primary sources used the term “Anglo-Saxon”, so here’s another question:

“historical accuracy” is such a red herring in descriptions that are so obviously utterly framed by language shaped in a long historiographical tradition.

^ this this this. Dr. Robin Fleming have a great talk on this a few years ago. Also, Dr. Finnbarr Flood’s _Objects of Translation_ does an excellent job of commenting on objects and identities, presumed and otherwise. I’ve found it really interesting.
