I've never heard of the book myself, unfortunately. But just because a historian wrote about this premise (which was unfortunately not cited in the Science paper anyway), does not mean it's accurate. And the demographic data is very poor, but they don't seem to indicate what their medieval sources actually are. The causality here seems flimsy, and the paper really does not reckon with medieval scholarship in a meaningful way.

The premise is about the medieval church’s impact on kin relationships is it not? Then not even using medieval data and also being incorrect about the medieval period is not okay.
