I've never heard of the book myself, unfortunately. But just because a historian wrote about this premise (which was unfortunately not cited in the Science paper anyway), does not mean it's accurate. The author is a social and economic historian, does popular biography, particularly on people from rural and urban lower classes. Those were mostly collected in a specific book series. And the german edition of
that book is from 2004. -
Yeah I did some googling on him. I mean, the book sounds interesting for sure, and the reviews pointed out some cool stuff. But it never made it onto my syllabi in undergrad, I don't believe.
