The only way that will change is if academics persist in waving the white flag (sic), surrendering the use of the phrase, & allowing racists to take possession of it.

      Tom Holland Retweeted Charles West

Not least because ‘English’ is already the word that white racists in England tend to use to describe themselves, whereas for most people in this country ‘Anglo-Saxons’ = the losers who got shat on at the battle of Hastingshttps://twitter.com/pseudo_isidore/status/1192534835597852672?s=21 …

The view that talking about "the early English" will combat racism in the UK is, to put it mildly, optimistic.

Plus, of course, describing the early Anglian & Saxon kingdoms as ‘English’ would be as anachronistic & distorting as describing Clovis as ‘French’.

Absolutely. The very contingency of the term ‘Anglo-Saxon’, the way it was constructed by Alfred to signify the emergent kingdom of what would become England, & to be back-projected onto an imagined past, is what makes it so useful.https://twitter.com/zaidasevilla/status/1192717074705125376?s=21 …

On the contrary I think “early English” is more racist. It makes people think that there was always an “English race”... while it does not exist.

      Tom Holland Retweeted Dinah Rose

It’s basically a projection of an academic culture war in the US onto the very different circumstances prevailing in this country. One might almost call it colonialist.https://twitter.com/dinahroseqc/status/1192718403569668097?s=21 …

I've been wondering whether this row has some American/UK element to it? To what extent do the objections come from US academics? Do they reflect different shades of meaning to "Anglo-Saxon" in the USA? Hard to tell from the reports I've seen.

He also posted a rather hilariously bad article several months back too I believe although I’ve scrubbed it from my memory. Oh and he supported that god awful transphobic letter from several months back.
