Why didn't llamas make it to North America? Too many parasites in the tropics between them and the Plains? Just wondering why there weren't vast llama herds on the Great Plains

I mean with people herding them, I haven't had coffee yet and I was thinking "sheep spread to Orkney and Southern Africa and China, why didn't llamas spread from the Andes to other grazeable lands?" So I mean not on their own, but with the expertise and protection of their humans

This is a good q. Certainly now I see the rare llama/alpaca farm in Canada, and they seem to do well.

But they seem to be kept more in a hobby farm situation than anything else.
