Strachan and Quin are long past their prime. Their approach to teaching the language does not meet the requirements of students today. They should at least be read together with https://www.amazon.co.uk/Students-Companion-Old-Irish-Grammar/dp/0615783104 … Better still, use: https://www.academia.edu/19954264/Sengo%C3%ADdelc._Old_Irish_for_Beginners_Syracuse_NY_Syracuse_University_Press_2006 …. /1https://twitter.com/gdsotoole/status/1190437157346988033 …

Thank you for these tips. I used Strachan and Quin when I learned but I found that they didn't prepare me for the vastness of the vocabulary and spelling variation.

On variation and shading into Middle Irish I found Kim McCone’s the best but his prose can be difficult to read because of his heavy use of abbreviations.

I can’t say I enjoyed McCone much at all, found it not too helpful for my purposes.
