It sometimes seems like I am the only ... medievalist? academic? who borrows books I need then and there, reads the relevant passages, scans and then returns them. What's with all this hoarding? Or am I not alone? Isn't the point of libraries NOT to hoard their contents?

Yeah I too sometimes keep books for a while, that's kind of the point - but I mean keeping it for months and years on end..? I just don't bother borrowing books if I have no time to read them (meaning I hardly ever borrow books but that's beside the point).

Not judging anyone who does, by the way (I can see how it may come across like that), and there's probably good reasons to do so. It's just that I never felt the need to sit on a stack of books so the practice mystifies me a bit.
