Replying to @AdmiralHip @BethandCats and
I mean there’s having a very general thesis because it’s an undergrad one (I assume, she never clarified) but this stuff is like the first thing you’d find presumably when doing research.

I just.... There's a very solid book on the history of knitting and it's the first thing that comes up on GOOGLE.

Yeah. The sort of pop history on Aran knitting is one thing that gets around but idk how you can research this without finding out that stuff is nonsense. She asked me for sources and I was like...there are so many? I didn’t even get into the general knitting hist stuff.

It sounds like she wrote something without literally any sources because everything I've ever read about knitting contradicts her and I don't understand lol

She said she had sources that backed up her evidence. She did say the sailor stuff was her own theory though. But the Aran stuff in particular is weird because even the Wikipedia page notes this stuff, and I think it has sources too.

I felt bad initially because I don’t want to dunk on an undergrad (idk if she is). But she was positioning herself as an expert, with her thesis. And now I’m annoyed because she’s trying to centre knitting being developed in Northern Europe it sounds, rather than N Africa/ME.

Well it’s what I assume, she talks about sailors in cold environments with sheep nearby.
