Nice to see some steam picking up in the field of archaeology about the term "Anglo-saxon". Not sure if Dr. Roberts knows the current discussion in medieval studies but I'm glad she's tapped in even marginally. She's also one of the coolest biologists around. #medievaltwitterhttps://twitter.com/theAliceRoberts/status/1186545929429626880 …

It’s interesting to me because that article is based on a book that is rethinking the invasions/migrations although the woman who wrote the book still uses the term even now? Idk. People have made very good points that her model doesn’t account for language/cultural shifts.

Wait, she does? She's on a Leeds panel with me next year. I can ask her that. lol

I mean it certainly seems that way on twitter. Maybe I am misrepresenting her though. Anyway I found her book really interesting because it does challenge this idea of “Germanic” invasions, although one is left with many questions. But it’s not a comprehensive book, quite short.

Well I noticed she had RT’d some stuff about moving away from Anglo-Saxon in light of the ISXX stuff, so idk.

Anyway idk, tangential to the whole discussion but I really liked this one review of the bookhttps://drfrancisyoung.com/2019/05/25/review-the-emergence-of-the-english-by-susan-oosthuizen/ …

Oh I see. So the general idea is okay but she's shaky with her evidence. I haven't read the book through yet, so I'll do that.

Definitely really interesting, and I think elsewhere she acknowledges these are issues to be resolved, I think though her thesis is saying (at least how I interpreted it) that the “English” were actually just British people? But I think is potentially...problematic.
