Very relevant to the current discussion in early medieval studies with some people attempting to argue that racism is an ‘American problem’ - racism has always been here in the uk and we have to fight it here #MedievalTwitterhttps://twitter.com/BenHCarrington/status/1184127074857971712 …
How would you define these peoples then, who identified (sometimes) as “Anglisc” (and I’ve been told that term is used by white supremacists too so that’s frustrating). I’m seeing different arguments on this, that England is worse because it = a nation etc.

I can't speak for the mid-7th to 9th centuries, but in the 4th-6th we have truly no idea how most of these people identified, or indeed, if they identified in coherent ethnic identities at all. We only have labels and identifications imposed upon them from outside.

(or back projected upon them from late-7th century onwards source material)

RE 'Anglisc' - this clothes website uses ALL of these terms (English; Anglisc; Anglo-Saxon) in clearly racist ways. This isn't an answer, but something we all need to think about going forward I think (cn for racism) https://wearetheenglish.com/sweatshirts--hoodies-9-c.asp …
