Because modern bubonic plague is very hard to catch. There were other factors involved and it doesn’t come down to medieval people were just fucking gross.

Anyway I see that get thrown around a lot. The bubonic plague, whether it be in the early medieval period or the late, is a hard to understand disease even with all the research that’s been done. It was horrible and killed many. It was not restricted to Europe either.
