Does anyone have links to good discussion about using anachronistic terminology within medieval studies? I’m being potentially challenged on using early medieval Ireland/Scotland/England but honestly any other terminology at this stage is too general for me. #MedievalTwitter

Hmm, no, but if you find some, let me know. I kept reading about "mudejars" extrapolated back into my research period and area of the Reconquista when nobody in the documents was calling them that. #MedievalTwitter

Yeah terminology like that is problematic for sure. Sometimes though anachronisms are impossible to avoid.

Perhaps some of the recent stuff about the problems of the term "Anglo-Saxon" & alternatives would be helpful. I'm thinking of some things @adam_miya & @ISASaxonists have written. Notably, "England" is a term that early English authors used themselves (e.g. "Englalond").

I am aware of the discussion, I have been following it closely. In Ireland and by Irish scholars I am being heavily challenged by my terminology for a England esp so I wanted some general justification for using it plus Ireland and Scotland (terms even more anachronistic)

        1) I vaguely recall Gurevich made a case that this wouldn't be a problem (there are others but he's a Big Name) as long as you're self-aware... 2) ...and self-awareness and -critique goes a long way in such cases. Explaining it's a "shorthand" might mollify potential challengers.

(re: 2) As in: trying to come up with a reasonable, contemporary alternative is equally limiting and might confuse readers even more. Qualifying your own terminology goes a long way towards being open about your own preconceptions (and those of your potential/intended audience).

Does anyone really dispute that Ireland is a meaningful term in the early Middle Ages. Scotland is much more problematic - but Ireland?

Not that I've seen, but I'm in Ireland. However, the complaints about anachronistic phrases (England, Scotland could just as easily be applied to Ireland, a term invented by the English in the 12th c. to apply to the island).
