This is all coming to a head for me now as someone who is almost 30. I have conflicting feelings on self-diagnoses but I do think I have an attention disorder and it was never diagnosed as a kid. Half the time they thought I had a hearing problem, until I got my ears checked.

I self-D'd before I went into a psychiatrist and got a real one (this was like literally a month ago, just turned 27). I honestly think 90% of academics have ADHD. Like so many "just academia things" are actually just ADHD things

self-D can be a problem but it's a good place to start, especially if you don't have time/money to get properly diagnosed

Yeah this is the thing. No psychiatrist in Dublin will see adults for ADHD apparently. In Canada they will but that means being put on a waiting list and that doesn’t work for me living abroad.

What the shit?? That's awful. Adult diagnosis is literally so common?? Maybe a primary care practitioner could do it? I mean ADHD is so common someone should be able to diagnose it with their eyes closed

Or at least they could recommend you to a psychiatrist if you ask them to, maybe. IDK I'm familiar with the US system so proper medical systems are very confusing to me

Honestly, health care in Ireland isn’t great. Especially as a non-EU person. I will check with her but I am unsure if she knows much about this.

Her meaning my GP. I like her a lot but sometimes she seems a bit backwards.

Although my Canadian GP is more up to date on things so I might ask her when I am back visiting.

That's a good idea -- idk about Canada but you might be able to get a rush apptmnt with her recommendation if you explain the timing.

It’s helped in the past for things like the allergist but psychiatrists are much harder to see I guess, even with a rush.
