A distressing but necessary read. When I did my undergrad in ancient and medieval history, the attitudes of most of the male staff in Classics was horrible. They cared little for actually imparting knowledge.https://twitter.com/Libertinopatren/status/1179053408172597248 …

The women put so much effort into their classes. Versus my one prof who basically said we didn’t have to show up to class because he couldn’t be bothered to teach.

One professor liked to stare at all the breasts of the women who sat in the front row, and apparently gave them higher grades (according to a female friend of mine who took advantage of this).

She suggested I do the same in order to get a better grade.

I never showed up to his classes and eventually I got a very high grade in the last one I took with him. Which was mandatory to take.

He never actually lectured either. We had whole classes where he’d just talk about the etyomology of beards and red hair.

It doesn’t surprise me to hear any type of Classics Institute is fun by racist sexist men. The field is attractive to conservative types who are committed to the ideal of Roman Imperialism and such. They view it as the perfect state, that Romans were white and superior.
