Please stop posting that thread about railroad gauges. It's copy-pasted from an ancient Facebook post that's largely bollocks anyway. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/railroad-gauge-chariots/ …

It doesn't say it's wrong though does it? It mostly criticises the jokey, fun way it's written.

It says it's “Partly true, but for trivial and unremarkable reasons.”

Yes, hence 'largely bollocks' as opposed to 'total bollocks'

It says the Romans made their carriages that width & nobody bothered changing anything. And it happens with other stuff too. That's what the story says but it's entertainingly written for a general audience. Like Horrible Histories. I don't think we're meant to take it seriously.

'That similarity is based much more on coincidence and inherent physical limitations than a direct line of imitation.'

And why is that a problem. The way I read the story, that's what it said. It was a fun read & he's en knows, were in direct need of a bit of fun right now.

I think the last three years have taught us the importance of fact checking stuff we see on social media, even if it makes us feel good.

Well maybe if it's important stuff but I'm not going to fact check a joke that makes me laugh & does no discernable harm. The world is bleak enough without removing more humour from it.

Perpetuating historically incorrect memes, as harmless as you might think it it, speaks to a larger issue of these “history” threads that go viral while we (historians) are ignored and told that we’re buzz killers for providing actual historical knowledge with sources.

And you assume that real history with sources and stuff cannot also be funny and amusing, is what I’m reading here. Which is so incredibly wrong. So these tweets are not only incorrect but they are ALSO plagiarized. So excuse us for wanting to correct it.

As someone who writes (possibly) amusing threads on (mostly) horrible historical engineering, but with no actual expertise, I endorse this. My favourite responses are those that gently correct me, add more detail, or pile off down an avenue I didn't know existed.
