He talks about trade with "Muslim nations" and about how the "history of India" is "fascinating." His problem isn't that he thinks only Europeans did things. He thinks PoC should study "their own history" and not "invade" English medieval history. This isn't a definition problem.

3) These ppl are tied to military movements and nationalist, "get out of our country" groups. The video ends with pics of him and others in military gear, with "Don't Tread on Me" shirts, etc. He says that ppl in the Post article should be thrown out of "our country."

4) They're def reading the comments, even if we aren't, and they're emboldened by them. He scrolls through the Post comments and reads them, crowing about how they shows that "most people" support them. The comments

5) They target PoC and women. He ignores me or attributes what I say to "them," while spending a great deal of time attacking Dr. Rambaran-Olm (and
@EileenAJoy a little). He keeps going back to Dr. Rambaran-Olm's pic and obsessing about her race. The harm is intersectional.1 reply 4 retweets 66 likesShow this thread -
6) He uses the ISXX statement of accepting diversity that they adopted after Hawaii to "prove" they can't possibly be racist ("look! it says so on their website! so they can't be racist!"). Like Sara Ahmed says, these statements protect the org while doing *nothing*.pic.twitter.com/Cq9vchr56P

#medievaltwitter, these are the people that are attacking PoC--especially WoC--who speak up about racism in medieval studies. They don't care about the def of medieval studies or whether history/art-history/whatever is included. They don't like to see PoC in these fields.1 reply 15 retweets 83 likesShow this thread -
He repeats talking points of some medievalists: PoC in the field are "thought police" from "1984" who want to "ban words," etc. Consider who you're supporting with these arguments. Tl;dr: Believe scholars of color about who medieval studies emboldens. Do the work. Fight back.

Thanks for this thread Erik. You point out with clarity this genre & its “talking points” & its intent to target POC/WOC. Yes, the call is coming inside the house. White medievalists use the same tropes online and in scholarly venues—even if they dress it up in “civil” language.

Honestly, I’ve heard white medievalists say some of the same shit this guy said, just not in a yelling Alex Jones voice. I remember a certain medievalism group kicking out WOC only a few months ago and calling them a “hostile takeover” of a “traditional” space.

Same here. But as @JonathanHsy said it’s the people who are more concerned with tone policing BIPOC for saying anything and ruffling feathers that really enable this behaviour. They all want to act like it’s not their problem and that we should be in our cells studying MSS.
