White medievalists: nitpicking details about things like the definition of the field is another form of silencing discussions of racism & white supremacy.
It implies (intended or no) that those details are more important than BIPOC’s lived experience #medievaltwitterhttps://twitter.com/ISASaxonists/status/1174683609908858882 …

No, it really doesn't imply that. It's easy to say so, and I can see why you might think that, but that's also at the root of the "nitpicking." Is racism/w.s. embedded in the history of our disciplines? yes. Is the field too white in terms of practitioners/students? yes. Do 1/

we all have an obligation to work on that and supporting our BIPOC/BAME colleagues? and our LGBTQ and disabled colleagues? Absolutely. Are the lived experiences of all of those colleagues the same? no, but some who have pointed out inconsistencies have been silenced. 2/

As a queer and disabled person who is also white, I definitely recognize that lived experiences differ, and yep, support would be nice, which is why I try to offer it to BIPOC

I am also a white, queer, trans, disabled person who, despite the bullshit that goes down in my life, has access to resources that BIPOC do not. I want to burn down all systems and institutions that do not support or even acknowledge the needs of or violence against BIPOC

Exactly. I’m with Micah and Margie as well. Nitpicking from white medievalists about this only serves to deflect from the deeper issues.

And statements saying that these discussions are not inclusive of other BIPOC and their experiences without actually pointing to others or elevating their voices instead of trying to excuse the behaviour of white medievalists is also not great.

Why thank you for demonstrating one of my points. How is this thread in any way excusing the behaviour of white medievalists? And how can I point to, or even elevate, others who are afraid to say anything? Your response is almost rote: “this is how we are supposed to do SJ work”

You say that people are afraid to say anything. Who are these people? Not asking you to name names here but your attitude runs roughshod over the people you purport to elevate, namely LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people in academia.

You are excusing white medievalists by excusing the reaction to the definition of medieval studies that white medievalists are having. Which is obfuscating the actual problem of racism and white supremacy.

Also, as a queer woman in academia, please don’t explain social justice to me. And since you seem to be frequently running counter to what the BIPOC in our field have been at risk for saying and getting attacked and death threats, this claim about people being afraid to speak 1/

Seems very disingenuous. It actually feels like you are using these people you are claiming to support as an excuse to throw your own opinions around and talk over people.
