I wish academics would stop saying things like “grad school made me poor.” as someone who grew up poor, grad school was the 1st consistent & stable income I had. Recognizing prior privilege doesn’t negate the need to increase student stipends & support 1/

But my institution and it’s leadership is obsessed with entrepreneurship and spending millions on a new business school while the arts/humanities and pure sciences get jack all. I love doing the PhD but my experience has not been one of stability and I am so much better off.

In comparison with other people anyway. But the situation is one of precarity for so many, and it’s really sad.
