I wish academics would stop saying things like “grad school made me poor.” as someone who grew up poor, grad school was the 1st consistent & stable income I had. Recognizing prior privilege doesn’t negate the need to increase student stipends & support 1/

I agree. Internal funding has dried up, government funding is super hard to get. Living costs are a big thing here, and TAing doesn’t pay the bills. And it’s more expensive (by a lot) for non-EU students.

This whole thread is an eye-opener for me as an American who paid his own way through grad school. I'm not complaining, mind you: I was privileged enough to be able to afford it. But I wasn't even aware my situation was out of the ordinary.

Yes and that is a problem. We (faculty) need to be way more transparent. If I write a letter for a student for more school, I’m going to ask about what their plans are and help think through pros and cons.
