There is almost no need to ever use a straw, we have mouths that can handle cups, glasses, goblets, bottles etc. Those who are sick, infirm or disabled might need them though.

Disabled people do need them. Particularly folks who cannot control their rate of swallowing, folks who cannot move or control their hands and arms, and people who cannot control the movements of their head and neck.

People with swallowing difficulties would generally be prescribed specially designed straws and not the disposable ones used for smoothies or carbonated drinks. They might look similar but they're sturdier plastic, shorter or thicker. And safer.

Except it’s not important just for swallowing problems. Allergies, sensitivities. Plus reusable straws can be hard to clean etc. Many disabled people use plastic straws as so many have been saying since these straw bans have been flying around.
