So. I just received an email from an ISAS board member, addressed to “Dear ISAS Members” but sent personally to what appears to be a batch of members in alphabetical order. It does not purport to speak for the advisory board (nor does it claim not to). 1/5

I am not going to try to unpack everything that is going on in this letter, but suffice to say that it offends me as an anti-racist accomplice & it makes me ill to think of BIPOC reading this letter, which minimizes and erases the harm they experience in the field & at large 2/5

If anyone wishes to read a copy of this letter, I see no ethical concern with sharing it with you; DM me or email me (or message me on FB if we’re friends there) and I will share it with you 3/5

While I have been sitting back (not quietly, I suppose, but still) to see what if anything senior scholars and folks who have leadership roles in this org would do beyond offer platitudes and perform wokeness for public audiences, I’m done. 4/5

As of today I am removing myself from membership in ISAS. Unless I see clear, direct, & substantive change, I will not participate in any further ISAS events or publications. My ultimate goal is to uplift and protect BIPOC students and scholars, & I can’t do that in ISAS 5/5

Addendum: I ended up making screenshots to send via DM and just decided to share them here. If you need a file for screen-reading, etc, just DM me your email address (lmk if you need a follow back)pic.twitter.com/5L8hpY6EJ1

And this also echoes this attitude I’ve seen from other white scholars opposed to the name change like, oh well we’re the REAL “woke” ones because other terms lead to racism so what about them? And the comment about the death threats...shit my blood is boiling.

The death threat comment was... in such bad faith that I can't even really deal with it. Like, if changing a name prompts a death threat, that is *not proof that the racism is unconnected to the name*

Also the death threat was, as far as I could tell, linked to the discussion of changing the name and Dr MRO’s talk the other day about white supremacy in the field. So ????

death threat for changing a name = unconnected to the language of that name apparently. such complex thinking from our medieval scholars...
