Geese, birds of all kinds, squirrels, and of course rodents. Mostly they have no interest whatsoever in us humans, our back yard only a conduit to more interesting vistas of grass and wildness. As it should be of course for wild things. However, one day we noticed that our veggie

Harvests were being eaten - nibbled, and on a daily basis. It wasn't the dogs then, as they spurned veggies. Ma had the theory that something was in the shed. Rustling and movement when she was in it getting wood or coal. How would we know who the courgette thief was? I hadpic.twitter.com/oXA0vS6sd2

A fair amount of corn starch glitter I was mucking about with as a bio degradable, non toxic or plastic and ethical means of adding shimmer to cosmetics (as was my job back then). We reckoned if we sprinkled the glitter over the entrance to the shed, we'd see what paws...pic.twitter.com/mkmIKmGMPl

However, it was pink. And this upset my daughter as she feared if it was a ratteh he would be gay bashed by macho rats in the wild for having little pink glitter paws. It's hard to keep your face straight to a very sensitive kid who makes that kind of statement, but we did.

And just told her rattehs don't have the same ways as people. His tattie folks would just think he was fabulous and magical. So, the powder was placed and right nuff, little rodent paw prints. The house sprang into action. Suitable means for him to leave were made, with plankspic.twitter.com/rIC8O04drW

To scurry up. But for whatever reason, he didn't. He earned the name Ryan after Ryan Seacrest, as his joy was to sit in the windowsill and listen to American Idol of a summer evening. Never mind that my saluki and greyhound were having major rage issues looking at him, but

He was a beautiful rodent. Pale golden coloured, graceful and dainty. He'd spend time washing in a little bath my ma set up for him at the bottom of the garden. By now he had a selection of seeds, nuts and veggies left in a little trough for him with fresh water in a bowl, and

He never once had any interest in coming into the house. We made a tale of him having a lost love.and rather than marry any lady rat apart from his love, he chose to live as a hermit. He was with us a better part of two years, and we never knew what happened to him.

I encountered two rats in Dublin awhile back. I heard some rustling in a bush near me when I was walking home so leant down to see, and two rats came out, one half-standing on the other, to get a look at me.

Very cute! Not what I expected rats to look like. Where I grew up there are no rats at all due to a government anti-rat programme so I had only ever seen mice. Had to rescue a baby mouse once, was only a little thing. These guys look like bigger versions of that little mouse.
