I can name off the top of my head at least 3 gyms I've worked at where men's class participation exceeded women's, and many many gyms where there are more women working out alone than men

working out alone vs in groups is no indicator of the general skill level of an exerciser. I've known jacked dudes who loved doing group classes for fun, and plenty of individual exercisers who lift hard and still look like garbage because they don't know what they're doing.

up until 10-15 years ago (generously), we were still telling women that lifting weights would either permanently deform their bodies, make them "mannish" or cause negative health outcomes (without any basis in evidence)

major influencers in the sphere of women's fitness (cough, tracy anderson) have made their careers off of fearmongering about how women need to train differently than men (usually, with crappy and non-evidence based programs)

second, I can assure you, being jacked (or working out more) will not necessarily increase your income, make you smarter or more competent, or somehow turn you into a CEO.

the only reason women's fitness HAS changed is because CrossFit (for as much as people hate on it) has probably been the #1 influence on getting women to lift weights in the past 50 years.

even then, many gyms are unrelentingly hostile towards women and people who don't know what they're doing - getting started is the hardest part, and early experiences matter.

very often, social participation and support is EXACTLY what people need to get started. I only started lifting weights because of the support of my best friend in high school.

but when men are socialized to be exposed to fitness and sport (and the gym) from a young age, women aren't to the same extent.

I really only started lifting with encouragement from one of my brothers, and prior to that I was only going to the gym with my mom because I was super uncomfortable with it beforehand.
