The International Society of Anglo-Saxonists needs to change its name to acknowledge that the term Anglo-Saxon is widely used in racist rhetoric. Be accountable and acknowledge that. Changing the name doesn't make you any less of a scholar. #medievaltwitter #ASS #shakerace

If you think fighting fascism is a 'witch hunt' and trying to make an org more inclusive is also a 'witch hunt' then you're a lost cause. Bye.

Replying to @ISASaxonists @NorseLass
Alex, how is asking for a racist name to be changed and for an organization to do something about sexual harassment bullying liberals? As we all know, witch hunts were led by women of color against white people defending the use of racist names. That's a great metaphor.

The name emerged in the 18th/19th century as a direct result of British racial ideas of white superiority. Scholars like Reginald Horseman have documented this in detail, and scholars such as Kathleen Reynolds have shown that the "Anglo-Saxons" themselves rarely used the name.

I agree with Erik here, plus it's not like we're having to rebrand medieval studies as a whole. I think we can come out the better if we find a term that isn't synonymous with racist ideals. Terminologies change, it's okay. Often they change for the better.
