I'd certainly not have them saying 'what'. My own kids didnt and dont. Perhaps it's a culture thing or age thing, dunno, but what is rather abrupt and rude imo. I was taught, pardon me, or Im sorry?

I’m from NA so different rules here. Was never taught “pardon me” growing up. Said either “what?” or “what’s that?” or “sorry?”

1. I don’t think “what” instead of “pardon” was ever such a big deal in Ireland. “May I” not “can I” was a thing though. 2. If I recall correctly the upper class English thing was actually “What” preferred to “Pardon” which was seen as middle class gentility
