...pokeberries are dark purple and cause a burning sensation in the mouth, salivation, GI cramps, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, and possibly anemia, altered heart rate and respiration, convulsions and death from respiratory failure. Don't eat shit unless you know what it is.https://twitter.com/chirasul/status/1165704273050472448 …

cool rule of berries: - Purple/blue: 90% chance it's fine, especially if it looks familiar - Red: 50% it's fine. Only eat if you recognize it - White: 10% it's fine. Do not eat it unless an expert has already ID'd it. Most are toxic

Children are particularly likely to die from eating pokeberries, and the juice can be absorbed through the skin. They smell absolutely *delicious* when crushed or damaged.

Oh yeah and the chemicals in pokeberries can cause cellular mutations that may increase your susceptibility to cancer or cause birth defects if you're pregnant! So yeah maybe 90% of red and purple berries are fine but that 10% that isn't can be a real bitch.

Don't eat wild foods unless you know what they are. Natural is not the same as safe. Handy rules of thumb will make you so sick you'll wish you were dead if they don't get you killed outright. Natural. Is not. The same. As safe. Only eat what you can 100% identify.

The rule of thumb I've heard- Imagine you're eating a pear, when some madman knocks it out of your hands and yells that it's poisonous, and you just keep eating it because it's just a pear, perfectly safe? *That* is how confident you need to be before you start eating wild food.

No, it doesn't mean that. Check your etymology first before spreading this around.
