Join clubs/societies. If you are in STEM take a humanities course and vice versa for students in humanities. Look for your classrooms ahead of time. Take pity on your TAs, they are overworked and underpaid (or not paid at all). Find all the study spots and cafes on campus.https://twitter.com/StaceyJSpiehler/status/1162898073665884160 …

Wander around all the buildings and explore. Rent a locker so you don’t have to lug all your things around. Figure out how the library works and use it. This one is big, I have had a lot of students who fear the library and never learn how to use it until too late.

Read the syllabus. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Back up your work ALWAYS. Dropbox is free, gmail has cloud storage, get an external hard drive, email your work to yourself.

If you feel like your readings are too daunting: if it is a book, read the intro and conclusion first and then read the body. If they are primary sources, try to identify what kind of source it is and what is the surface information, then try to read between the lines.

You are allowed to look up context for your readings. If you don’t know something, google it. Google scholar is actually very helpful.
