Just some general tips for asking questions at an academic conference especially to PhDs/ECRs.
Thank the speaker and even if you didn’t like the paper it’s nice to get a “it was very interesting” or something.

If the speaker doesn’t understand the question, try to explain more clearly what you are trying to get at. Don’t just...repeat what you said that was confusing.

And above all, if you think that the question period is the time to show off and/or embarrass the speakers who are doing their best, especially if they are women, queer, PoC, etc? Then zip your mouth.

Oh and also if you see someone asking a horrible question it’s a good show of solidarity to either call out that person or try to side with the speaker.
