You'll probably want to buy your committee gifts so with a 3 to 5 person committee, that can cost $150 to $1k.

I haven't even enumerated what it costs to buy clothes, get hair and other personal care done, help with lodging or flights, and plan any parties after graduating.

Literally no one told me how much it would cost me to leave my school after graduating. It's one of those hidden lessons you don't learn til you get there.

So many people in my mentions calling gifts for advisors a bribe as if it's not standard practice across disciplines and fields the thank people who you've enjoyed working with for years and who you will be leaving soon...

It’s not standard. Look, grad school is expensive, but your thread lists a few outrageous, possibly illegal, and definitely unusual items. Never heard of graduation announcements. Where is this happening?

At my university a faculty member is not allowed to accept such gifts. Conflict of interest. And that’s frankly how it’s supposed to be.

We (professors) should not accept gifts for doing our work. I’m sorry to hear that this seems to be happening, and I hope there is a way to raise this as an issue.

There are still letters of reference to be written. We have a pretty firm “no presents” culture, but we love to treat our students to a post-defence lunch.

Yeah you might where you are at (Ottawa) but that is not the situation everywhere, nor is it going to be the same for a first gen academic of colour either. I knew plenty of people IN CANADA who got their committee gifts afterwards anyway.
